The founder of NPC is a former Indian Navy officer. NPC was instrumental in financing and acquiring the sailboat Gregal for legendary sailor Abhilash Tomy’s solo circumnavigation by sea, through GGR 2022. Ownership eventually changed hands to Bayanat, and Abhilash completed the challenge with flying colours, finishing second. This achievement also set the foundation for NPC to take up its sea based approach.
The Next Voyage
A modern sailboat, large enough to accommodate around 8 to 10 people and technically capable of sailing across oceans, is being acquired by Q3 2026 or Q1 2027, to embark on its first sea voyage from Lorient, France, to Pondicherry, India, across the Cape.
Objectives of the Voyage
01Health
Carry out scientific experiments, data collection and research related to ocean science, marine life, climate change, pollution and alternate energy.
02Heritage
Re-enact the ancient trade route by sea, from France to India.
03Culture & Knowledge
Exchange ancient culture, and economic and technological interests, with France and other nations where the boat stops along the way.
04Coordination
Act as a dynamic platform for coordinating HKC land based expeditions and pavilion exhibits in nations where the boat stops.
Why a Scientific Vessel
Several factors combined led NPC to convert the vessel into a scientific vessel, since more than 50% of health and environmental issues, relating to health, climate and pollution, are connected to the oceans. This decision also enabled NPC to achieve its other core HKC objectives.
All of the above is intended to be carried out in collaboration and partnership with institutes and scholars, from both the local region and the wider world.
